Scottish Cycling Events this Summer

Now that the clocks have gone forward and Spring is definitely upon us, the gang at Recyke-a-Bike are getting ready for a summer of exciting cycling events. Here in Scotland we are spoiled for choice for events, whether you prefer road races, sportives, mountain biking or cyclo-cross. Here are our top picks for fun and friendly events to try across Scotland this Summer!

Sportive

Midsummer Beer Happening Sportive - 18th June - Stonehaven

Midsummer Beer Happening Sportive

How does a cold beer sound after finishing a long day in the saddle? How about a choice of over 140 beers, live music and excellent food? For those of you who like their re-hydration to be a little stronger, the Midsummer Beer Happening Sportive is the event for you. Returning for its second year in association with Stonehaven Cycling Club, the challenging 72 mile route takes riders over the mountainous Cairn O'Mount in both directions with spectacular views, and finishes at the Midsummer Beer Festival by the sea in Stonehaven. For the feint of heart there is an alternative 52 mile route which has less climb and will get you to the beer tent a bit quicker! The Midsummer Beer Happening has been a popular event in Stonehaven for several years, and the addition of the cycling events has made it even more of an unmissable occasion.

Road Racing

Crit Under The Castle - 19th June - Stirling

Crit Under The Castle

A round up of cycle racing would not be complete without highlighting Stirling's own Crit Under The Castle. Organised by Stirling Bike Club in collaboration with Stirling City Council, this prestigious event sees the city of Stirling turned into a fast-paced closed race course for the day. Home to the Scottish Crit Champs yet again in 2016, this event is an unmissable day in Scottish Road Racing. There are events for everyone - from under 8s and beginners, right through to Elite Male and Female races, which proudly feature equal prize funds for each race. Entry is still open - don't miss out on your place alongside some of Scotland's best cyclists! Information and entry - http://castle.stirlingbikeclub.org.uk/

Mountain Biking

10 Under the Ben - 25th June - Nevis Range, Fort William

10 under the Ben is described as the 'Flagship' of No Fuss Events, and it's easy to see why this event grows in popularity each year. Returning for it's 13th edition, 10 Under is Suitable for mountain bikers of all ages, sizes and abilities. With a variety of entry options (solo, pair, trio or quad), this 10 mile looped race keeps going for 10 hours on challenging yet rideable trails in beautiful scenery. How many laps will you complete? The fastest riders can complete the 10 miles in around an hour, with prizes awarded in all categories for those who complete the most laps. With entertainment all day for your supporters and team mates, this event is less race and more festival of all things MTB.

Cyclocross

SocialCross - 2nd July - Isle of Mull

The latest addition to the Scottish Cyclocross calendar is the 'SocialCross', taking place this July on the Isle of Mull. Described as an afternoon of Cyclocross, ceilidhing and craic, this event is suitable for the whole family and would be a great summer holiday day out. There will be three 30 minute races in the beautiful grounds of Glengorm Castle which are open to all riders, male and female, over the age of 12. There are also junior races, adult balance bike races, and a social ride planned for the next day around the island. This looks like a great event on the beautiful Isle of Mull, which is a perfect destination for an active break with friends or family this summer.
